G'Day Guys, Well here goes.. My Carbon Edition Kit has arrived & I'm about to start building the Boat up to what I hope will be Race Standard, which pretty much means straight out of the Box with a few minor personal preferences.Have to say I like the look of the hull. Here I was thinking it was goiing to have a bumpy weave style surface. How wrong I was. No paint going on this little beast. lots of 1200 wet & dry for the deck..I'll be posting photos as I go along so should make it easy to follow. I'll weigh most parts as I have other kits that I want to mix & match with (all within the rules). Hopefully I can see areas that I can save weight & maybe pass on a few ideas. In the meantime I hear rumours of a Carbon Servo Tray.. Any Idea what & where is one of these?? Photos please...CheersJohnWABoats

OK Guys, Step One.. What exactly are the differences in the Kits. Other than the material thicknesses I can see a few problems with Hatch & Keel Box alignment. Some adjustments will need to be done with a bit of triming & sanding of the Keel surfaces to compensate for these minor issues. Before starting I decided to weight the major components of the Kit (Hull, Deck, Keel Box & Hatch). With 2 spare Mk2 Kits here it was easy to weigh each & compare any differences. Interesting the two Mk2 Hulls were different, but only by 2 grams so I took the middle as a guide. Below is a chart showing the differences in each component & the overall weight differences. Looks like I will have to find a saving of 60 grams somewhere inside the hull fitout to bring it down to at least a similar weight to my standard Mk2. I've been given lots of 1mm & 2mm Styrene & ABS sheets so I will be removing a lot of the wood components & replacing them with alternative materials. Hopefully they will be water resistant as well. A few grams should be saved by using Hatch Tape instead of the clips. I'll have to plan this one out carefully. My preference is the Carbon Hull with Standard Mk2 Deck. Cheers John WABoats Photos will be loaded in the WA Image Gallery under Build Photos

Time for an Update.. Sorry for the Dealay I've been off doing a few other things at the moment. Weather has been so good that things around the house needed sorting while the weather was holding.Managed to get some things sorted on my Race boat & it seems taht I reprogrammed a servo without actually realising what I had done. Darn thing kept over travelling & dumping air out of the Jib. All sorted (I hope). Anyways back to the build of the Carbon Edition. Mostly I have decided to make new internals & give the Wood Bits away. So far I have sourced some really nice ABS Foam Board that can be used to replace any structural areas. To compare weights I have cut out a template from a few materials and weighed these against the woody bits. The Foam Board is a smidge heavier but with the structural support I think I can get away with not using a few of the recommended parts in the Kit. The Bow support doesn't seem to be needed, especially in the Carbon with the thicker plastic. The cross support & keel-box support looks like a nice idea but not really needed. Once I get started I'll be cutting out the parts using the Laser cut wood ones as a template. That should take a few days. That should do for now. Cheers John

G'Day Guys
Here goes for another monthly update. Been real slow with getting distracted by other things at home. Missus works for the Election Mob so been busy doing lots of homeduties while she's away doing 60hr 7 day weeks. The Old Boy (Dog) has been diagnosed with Addison's Disease so things were a bit touchy while we sorted him out. All is good now. Anyway, I've been thinking about the finish on the boat & decided taht aplain Keel & Bulb just wasn't going to happen. Having a few spares lying about I decided to get to work on a design that would complement the Carbon Feel. This is what I have come up with.. A few goes trying to get it right but overall I think it worked. A clear gloss coat is all that will be need & I can starting seeing how it performs under the other two hulls.
